Lockheed Martin’s F-35 Lightning II is a 5th Generation fighter with three main variants, including the F-35C, which, as a carrier aircraft has larger wings and horizontal stabilisers than other types as well as folding wing tips. It is also recognisable by its launch bar for catapult launches, the arresting hook, and its landing gear reinforced to withstand punishing carrier take-offs and landings. The F-35C looks set to be a core presence in the air arms of the American Navy and Marines for many years to come.
